An alternative washing liquid must suit both the resin and the equipment. A lower odour, different flashpoint or household availability does not establish compatibility.
Compare the documented routes
| Route | What to check |
|---|---|
| Water-washable resin | The exact resin must permit water; collect contaminated water |
| TPM | Use only where the resin and machine makers approve it; check rinsing instructions |
| Proprietary washing solution | Read its own SDS and the material's current instructions |
| Ethanol or another alcohol | Confirm the precise approved mixture and concentration; do not assume a household blend matches |
Formlabs lists IPA, TPM and its own Resin Washing Solution as validated options for its system, while warning against unapproved alternatives. That approval does not transfer to another manufacturer's machine or resin. Its guidance also describes additional rinsing for some alternatives. Checked 25 October 2026.
Water changes the washing medium, not the waste problem
Anycubic Water-Wash Resin 2.0's technical sheet explicitly warns against discharging its wastewater into drains. Keep the liquid contained and use the product SDS and council instructions for the final route. Checked 25 October 2026.
Before switching
Write down the full cleaning product name, approved resins, machine compatibility, drying or rinse steps, SDS storage requirements and disposal route. If one of these remains unknown, ask the manufacturer before filling a tank. Do not blend spare cleaners into a homemade substitute.
The IPA planning tool helps record your own liquid quantities; it does not certify a substitute's effectiveness or safety.
